Porcelain laminate veneers (PLVs) are widely celebrated for their ability to transform a smile with minimal alteration to natural tooth structure. However, long-term survival under real-world chewing forces remains a primary concern for clinicians. Alenezi et al. (2021) conducted a systematic review to pool global data, calculate a 10-year estimated cumulative survival rate (CSR), and catalog the isolated causes of technical and biological failure. MethodologyThe investigators executed an extensive electronic search of clinical trials published over a 25-year window, applying strict inclusion criteria: a minimum clinical follow-up of 3 years and detailed tracking of failures. A total of 25 longitudinal clinical studies encompassing 6,500 individual PLVs were synthesized. Survival analysis methods were applied to evaluate specific failure modes, including structural fractures, debonding (falling off), secondary caries (decay), and endodontic (nerve) complications.
